How to manage mixed level classes in First Class

In an ideal world, your classes all have the same level.

This is something that you should strive towards however the reality is that this is not always possible.

One of the challenges with mixed level classes is that skills are tied to a level in First Class. Each class can only have one level which can make it difficult to assess students if a mixed scenario occurs.

Below we explore options for mixed classes and how you can manage assessments in First Class in these scenarios.

Option 1

Set up different level classes at the same time.

For example, you may run a 4pm class with teacher Alex.

This class has 2 students who are red level

And another 2 students who are orange level.

You can set up 2 classes at 4pm, one red and one orange both taught by Alex.

This way you can assess the students for the appropriate skill criteria tied to the level.

Option 2

Create a single class with a level based on the majority.

Eg. This is normally a red class but you have one student who is an orange and you don’t have a suitable class elsewhere

In this option you can use the recommended level feature to make it clear that this student has a different level they are working with.

The recommended level will show at the top of the skills panel on the class view. This can be updated on the student profile by clicking open the profile and editing the recommended level on the left panel.

For students working on a different level outside of the main level of the class you can assess them for their recommended level directly on their profile.

Open their profile, and go to competencies and skills and choose their recommended level from the drop down.

You can then update the skills for that level within the competencies/skills panel.

These skills will reflect in the progress report section on the customer app if they click the show more button.

Note: The recommended level feature has other impacts in terms of the customers use of the system. The recommended level will restrict ability for the customer to make new bookings for that student. For example, if the recommended level is Green, then the customer will only be able to view and book green classes online. This is one factor to consider when implementing this feature. (Particularly if you use online bookings)

As discussed, the ideal scenario is to have consistent levels and this should always be the aim, however by combining the recommended level feature with the competency/skills feature on the student profile, you have a way around to track the students skills and progress.
